Alan Sorrell was a local Southend artist who became a sought-after archaeological illustrator. During the Nubian Rescue Campaign, the Illustrated London News <\/em>commissioned him to make a visual record of the excavations, archaeology and landscape of Nubia shortly before it was drowned by Lake Nasser. This is the first major display of his works in over 25 years and includes incredible views of the walls of Buhen under excavation, Abu Simbel under variable conditions, and excavations at Arminna. The exhibition also offers a fascinating insight into the landscape of the Nubian Nile valley, the archaeology of Nubia and Nubian society, at a point just before they were utterly changed by Lake Nasser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"693\" src=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofpetrie.org.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Sorrell_Buhen-1024x693.jpg\" alt=\"Painting of a deep ditch with fragmentary mudbricks with a large wall and towers to the right.
